Edward Hopper Beach Inspiration

Edward Hopper, July 22, 1882-May 15, 1967,  one of America's great painters and printmakers. His work is characterized by crisp attention to detail, often to the point of wondering if it is a photograph or a painting. The saturated color palette and strong use of light and shadow as well as the subject matter make them a feast for the eyes. Can't you just feel the ocean breeze?

Feast on the images below and see if you can glean any inspiration today!

Wife Jo on the Beach - the woman in all his paintings is his wife Jo in one form or another.

The Hoppers Cape Cod House was almost to the tip of the cape in Truro which was recently made semi-famous for a great white shark attack! Fortunately it appears that the shark did not like how the man tasted and let him be. Moral of the story is, don't swim by sand bars (we used to do that all the time) and don't swim with the seals!  click here to read the shark attack story

Cute visit by a painter and his wife to the home of Edward and Jo Hopper. Click here to see

Here's a panoramic view of their summer house. I'm thinking I need to go out there one of these days....Click here to see it.

Here's an interesting look and account of Cape Cod in Hopper's Day and now. Click here.

  1. Thanks for the inspiration! This makes me want to make another trip to Port Townsend, WA before winter sets in again. :)
